What is Pudsey Civic Society?

Pudsey Civic Society was formed in 1974/75 by a group of local residents, independent of the Leeds City Council.
  • The Society represents the community, therefore, the more members it has, the more views it can express.
  • The Society is consulted by Leeds City Council on various issues such as planning, and the siting of new developments. They take notice of the Society's comments because they know these are also the views of the local people.
How does the Society benefit the local area?

The environment is a major concern of the Pudsey Civic Society and it strives to make local surroundings as pleasant as possible.
  • Many trees have been planted and public footpaths and walks in the area, especially the old railway cutting, have been conserved.
  • "Pudsey in Bloom" has been brought to life by members and daffodils have been planted throughout the District.
The Historical Committee collects documents and artifacts of the past
  • The Society also has an archive collection of old photographs, newspapers, books (including indexed copies of the monumental inscriptions from various graveyards), maps, etc., in Pudsey Library and these could prove invaluable when researching your family or perhaps your own home.
How would the Society benefit me as a member?

The annual fee entitles members to two half yearly Journals giving details of The Society's general activities as well as including informative articles and sketches on various aspects of Calverley, Farsley and Pudsey's life and buildings, past, present and occasionally future. In addition:-
As a resident of Pudsey
You, as an individual, would have a chance to express your feelings as to how you would like the area in which you live to be seen in the eyes of others.
  • There are monthly talks during the Winter on topics as varied as "The History of the Gramophone" to "The Plants of Golden Acre Park" via "Undercliffe Cemetery"
  • The Summer months bring evening walks in the neighbourhood, generally with experienced guides passing on their knowledge of the area; coupled with one Family stroll and childrens' quiz.

As an interested person living outside Pudsey
You have access to information and publications normally only available locally.
  • The archive collection could prove useful when researching your family history.
How do I become a member?

You can join the Society at any meeting or by sending details of full name and address on the Membership Application Form with the appropriate subscription.
